How to Crochet Children's Hats
Crocheting can be used to make a variety of wearable garments, from hats to gloves to scarves and sweaters. Making a child's hat is a simple task involving crocheting in the round. You can make one for your own child or make several to donate to a local charity; one hat takes only a few hours to complete. Choose yarn in any color or weight you like, with a hook to match gauge.

Begin the hat by making two chain stitches, and making 12 half double crochet stitches into the second chain. Join the last half double crochet stitch to the first to make a circle. As you continue with your circle, you will increase each round by 12 stitches. So for round two, you will make two half double crochet stitches in each stitch around; for round three, you will make one half double crochet stitch in two consecutive stitches and two half double crochet stitches in the next one, repeating around the circle. Continue this increasing pattern until the circle is just slightly smaller than the circumference of your child's head.

Crochet down the sides of the hat. Work evenly in the round all the way around the hat; this means you will make one half double crochet stitch in every stitch of every round. Continue to do this until your hat reaches the desired length; you can make it beanie style and have it come down to the ears, or make it longer and fold up the brim.

Embellish your hat. For a little girl's hat, crochet a scalloped shell-stitch edging onto the last round. Or add a flower to the side, or thread a ribbon through the third row up from the brim and tie it in a bow on the side of the hat. For a boy's or girl's hat, add a pom pom to the top of the hat or crochet a few spirals for the top. Switch yarns during the hat so you can alternate colors in a pattern. Or add a second color of yarn as a single crochet border around the bottom edge of the hat, and make a hat topper to match.
