How to Crochet a Baby Bonnet
Crocheting is an ideal craft for making baby items because you can make a unique gift in a relatively short amount of time. If you want to crochet a baby bonnet, you only need to know how to crochet in the round and crochet through the back loops of a stitch. Use any type of yarn and any hook that matches it and you can crochet a baby bonnet in an evening.

Begin by crocheting in the round. Start by making three chain stitches and then making 11 double crochet stitches into the first chain, joining with a slip stitch to the third chain. This is your beginning circle. You will now increase this circle in two more rounds; for round two you will make two double crochet stitches in every stitch around, and in round three make two double crochet stitches in one stitch and one in the next. For round three, leave the last four stitches unworked.

Continue to work around, but in rows this time. Turn your work at the end of each row and work back across in the other direction. For row four, double crochet in each of the first two stitches, then make two double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around. For row five, work only in the back loops of each stitch across in the following pattern: three double crochet stitches followed by two double crochets in the next stitch.

Add a shell pattern. For row six, make two chains as your starting double crochet, then skip the next double crochet stitch. Make a shell stitch in the following one; a shell stitch consists of three double crochets in one stitch. Then skip the next stitch and shell in the next, until you reach the final two stitches. Skip the second-to-last stitch and double crochet in the last one. Turn your work. To continue the shell pattern, make one double crochet stitch on the end of each row and make a shell stitch in the center double crochet from each shell in the previous row. Make two more rows of shell stitch pattern, for a total of eight rows. If you want the bonnet to come out further past the baby's forehead, make a ninth row.

Make the bonnet ties. At the end of the last row, when you finish your double crochet stitch you will make 30 chain stitches and then slip stitch back down them to get to the bonnet. Make a row of single crochet stitches going around the bottom edge of the bonnet, down the sides of rows 5-8 then across the bottom of the beginning stitches and up the opposite sides of rows 5-8. Make another set of 30 chain stitches for the opposite tie, slip stitch down the chain to get back to the bonnet, connect with a slip stitch and fasten off. Weave in all loose ends.
