1
Check to see if there is any standing water. If there is not, run some water or pour water into the drain until there is a visible amount of standing water. This will let you know when the drain has been cleared as the standing water will run down the drain once the impediment is removed.
-
2
Feed the drill-tipped end of the auger into the drain and continue feeding until you encounter the clog in the drain.

3
Navigate around tricky turns in the drain, which can stop the progress of your auger, by moving the auger in a pulsing motion. Pull the auger back a few inches then press forward again. This will allow it to hit the bend at a slightly different angle than previous attempts until an angle which allows it to navigate around the corner is found.
-
4
Turn the crank on the auger, when you encounter the clog, while continuing to press forward. This will cause the auger to drill through the clog, breaking it up.
-
5
Pull out the auger after you have fed the full line. Continue to crank, as you pull the auger out, to prevent it from getting caught on any build-up remaining on the walls of the pipe.
-
6
Call a plumber if using the auger fails to clear up the clog. Any further clog clearing requires more than simply working on the drain and should only be performed by a trained professional to prevent damage.
