How to Make a Festive Indoor Putting Green

In order to practice your putting away from the course, make your own indoor putting green for the home or office. You can make it as festive as you want to, there is no need to stick to the standard green turf and plain box. Just like golf balls come in different colors, your home practice area can be created displaying different designs as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide whether you want a flat putting green or a raised one. For a flat putting green, cut a piece of plywood at least 1-inch thick, 4-feet wide and 8-feet long. Ideally, you would make it 15-feet long if you have the room for it.

    • 2

Cut a platform if you wish for it to be raised. Use solid pieces of wood to build a frame that will house the plywood board and as many support beams underneath to keep it stable while being walked on. They need to be at least 4 1/2-inches high, cut to the length and width of your plywood board. Use brackets and nails to tack them together

    • 3

Build a rectangle box, at least 4 1/2-inches high, cut to the length and width of your plywood board. Brace the ends together with brackets and create the support braces underneath from solid wood also, spacing them apart so that there are no "weak spots" (areas that sink down) when you walk on the top.

    • 4

Use a compass and pencil to draw a circle that is 4 1/4 inches in diameter on the plywood board for your hole. Make sure to leave 1 to 2 feet on each side, to see how off your stokes are if you miss. Use a jigsaw to cut this out for the smoothest possible finish.

    • 5

Choose a short nap carpet instead of the standard turf to make a festive indoor putting green. Any color that matches the rest of your interior design will work, as long as the ball is able to glide smoothly over the surface.

    • 6

Glue the carpet or turf down smoothly. Start at one end, letting the carpet overhang the side about an inch and coat both the board and back of the carpet with carpet glue. Press down firmly, working your way up to the top, stretching the carpet so that there are no lumps or swells that will make the putting surface uneven.

    • 7

Trim off the overhang of the carpet on the board and place it down on the platform, making sure that the edges are flush with the frame. Coat both the platform and the edges of the board where it meets with wood glue, place them together and then use small nails to tack down the sides and ends to secure it snugly in place.

    • 8

Paint the sides of the platform to enhance the appearance of the practice green while making a festive indoor putting green. You can stencil designs or simply coat it with a bold color to complement the carpet that you chose.

    • 9

Cut out the hole and put in a cup if you have one and finish it all off with a bright flag to cheer you on to improving your game, even when no one is around. Add a small push light in the bottom of the cup or sound button that goes off every time you make it.
