How to Add Video Tracks in Sony Vegas
Whether you're overlaying separate video streams or want to add video plug-ins and special effects elements to your movie, you'll need to add video tracks to your project when working with more than one file in Sony Vegas. This method can be used in most versions of Sony Vegas, including Sony Vegas 7 and 8. Remember to always save your work after adding extra tracks to a project--closing out of it or deleting it without saving can cause you to lose your work.
Instructions
-
-
1
Open Sony Vegas and navigate to the left-hand side of the project workspace where you can see all the track names available.
-
2
Right-click the current video track (usually track No. 3) and select the "Insert Video Track" command. The new track will appear above the current video track.
-
-
3
Double-click the name field on the track or right-click on the track and select the "Rename" command to name it.
-
4
Click the new video track to drag and drop it in the desired location.
-
5
Open your movie file using the "File -> Open" command; it will land in the media bin by default. Drag it and drop it into the Sony Vegas timeline so that the video portion lands in one of your two video tracks and the audio portion lands in the audio track. There are also tracks to distinguish between voice, music and sound effects, so you can make your track determinations based on these track names.

Tips & Warnings
According to videoforums.co.uk, there are a limited number of video tracks you can insert in the Studio versions of Sony Vegas. According to eventdv.net, however, the full Pro version allows unlimited amounts of video tracks to be inserted. If you try to insert more than the allowed number of video tracks in Sony Vegas Studio versions, the option will be grayed out and the shortcut "Control"-"Shift"-"Q" won't work.
