Teaching Safety
-
1
Teach children that fire is dangerous, and can burn. If they are old, you can do a few controlled experiments with fire and paper to show how it can quickly destroy something.
-
2
Tell small children to never touch or play with matches and lighters, and if they find any lying around, to tell their parents.
-
-
3
Plan an escape route from the house. Involve your children in the plan. If they help to plan it, then they are more likely to remember it if the need ever arises.
-
4
Practice the escape plan, so that children will be able to do it if the house is ever on fire.
-
5
Teach your children that firefighters are there to help them. If possible, take them on a trip to the fire station so that they can see the firefighters in all their gear, especially the face masks. You do not want your children to be scared if they see a firefighter during a fire.
-
6
Demonstrate for the children the "stop, drop and roll" method of putting fires out. If their clothing catches on fire, they need to know how to put it out.
-
7
Show how to crawl low on the ground beneath smoke. Practice crawling through the house, making sure to stay down low.
-
8
Make sure children are aware of smoke detectors, and what they are for. Test the smoke alarm each month, and make the child familiar with the sound of it. Be sure they know what to do if they hear it go off.
-
9
Practice safety while cooking. Always supervise small children, and make sure they know proper safety when using a stove or oven.
