How to Fix a Scanner That Puts Dust on Glossy Photos

Glossy photos are photo prints with a clear, shiny coat applied over the surface of the photograph. While this gloss tends to make the photo more attractive by increasing contrast and removing haze, it also makes the surface of the photo tacky. This makes glossy photographs susceptible to dust. A dusty scanner can put dust on glossy photos that is difficult to remove without scratching the surface of the photo. To fix a scanner that puts dust on your glossy photos, keep your scanner clean and free from dust.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your scanner and disconnect it from its power source either by unplugging the scanner from the wall or removing the power cord from the scanner itself.

    • 2

Spray the surface of the scanner with compressed air to remove any large, loose dust particles from the scanner glass.

    • 3

Use a microfiber or other static-free, non-lint cloth. Do not use normal towels as they are rough and may scratch the surface of your scanner. Stay away from paper towels, as they may deposit more lint on the scanner than you are able to remove.

    • 4

Spray a mild glass cleaner on your cloth. Do not spray the glass cleaner directly onto the scanner, as any drips may get into the internal workings of the scanner and damage it.

    • 5

Rub the cloth over the surface of the scanner glass with a firm, continuous motion. The glass cleaner will not harm the plastic of the scanner, so make sure you wipe all the way to the edges of the scanner glass, particularly the corner in which photographs will be placed.

    • 6

Fold the cloth over to expose a clean, un-dampened side, or use a second cloth to dry the surface of the scanner.

    • 7

Reconnect its power source and turn the scanner on after the scanner has dried completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wet-cleaning your scanner prevents dust and dirt particles from scratching the surface of the scanner glass when they are rubbed around by a cloth.

  • Keep your scanner lid closed at all times when not in use to help prevent dust from accumulating on the surface of the scanner.
