To create bar codes in OpenOffice, you must first download and install the bar code extension, then follow a few simple steps.

      Head to the following web address: http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/barcode. Click the "Get It!" button to download the bar code extension.

      Once the download has completed, open OpenOffice. Click "Tools>Extension Manager" and then click "Add." Navigate to the extension you just downloaded. It should be named "barcode.oxt." Highlight it and click "OK." OpenOffice will automatically install the extension.

      Restart OpenOffice. To create a new drawing, click "File>New>Drawing."

      Click "Insert>New Barcode." Select the type of bar code you wish to create. Enter the value of the bar code in the "Barcode Value" field. Click OK. Your new bar code should now appear on your drawing.
