How to Convert AutoCAD to an Earlier Version

When working in AutoCAD, there are times you may need to save a drawing file to an older version for compatibility issues. It can be a big headache when you send a file saved in a new version of AutoCAD to a consultant who is working with an older version of AutoCAD. Your consultant will be unable to access the file. Save trouble and time by following these steps to save your file to the earliest version used by your team.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the file to be converted with the corresponding, or newer, version of AutoCAD. For example, if you are trying to convert an AutoCAD 2008 drawing file into an AutoCAD 2006 drawing file, open the drawing file in AutoCAD version 2008 or newer. A 2008 file cannot be opened in AutoCAD version 2006, but it can be opened in version 2010.

Go to "File" then click on "Save As." The "Save Drawing As" box will pop up and will include two drop-down fields. The "File Type" field, located below "File Name," will give you the different file type options available to save this file in. Click on the drop-down menu to see the options and select the version you would like to save your file in. AutoCAD gives you the ability to save in several different, older versions.

Verify that your file is saved in the previous version by checking that file's properties. The version information may not be included in the properties so you will have to check by opening the file using the older version of AutoCAD.

    • 4

Change the settings in AutoCAD if you would like the program to automatically save the file in an older version. Go to "Tools" on the main toolbar and then click on "Options." Click on the tab labelled "Open and Save." Under "File Save" there is a drop-down menu with version options. Select the version you need AutoCAD to automatically save your file to and click on "OK." Your file will now be saved in the version that you designated.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some objects in your drawing may not be backwards-compatible so be sure to check your file, after you've saved it to an earlier version, to ensure that no information is missing.
