How to Join the Navy Seabees

The Seabees began in 1941. The word comes from CB or Construction Battalion. The Seabees work in four different areas: shore units, amphibious, underwater and mobile units. Builders, electricians, mechanics, plumbers and engineers make up the Seabee Battalion. They train to build and to fight if attacked. Joining the Seabees is similar to following any other career path within the navy. It starts with contacting a navy recruiter.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your local or regional navy recruiter. Be sure you meet all the basic requirements for joining the navy. Score high in mechanics, electrical and engineering on the ASVAB test. As you begin the recruiting process, request a Seabee rating (job) and a seat at the Seabee school. Take the oath of office and sign the contract for induction. You'll then receive your orders for boot camp.

    • 2

After you attend eight weeks of boot camp, you'll receive your orders to the Seabee "A" school for preliminary training. You'll transfer directly to the "A" school from boot camp and spend 12 weeks immersed in classroom and hands-on instruction and training. You'll then receive orders for your first duty station.

    • 3

Report to your first duty station and attend a two week Seabee Replacement Training. Training includes rifle practice, combat training, map reading, defense planning and other types of naval combat training. You'll train for 10 months at your home duty station, then deploy on a six-month mission rotation.
