How to Install a Metal Carpet Threshold
Metal carpet threshold material is installed as a transition between carpet and other flooring materials, including laminate, hardwood, engineered flooring and tile. Metal transitions make a nice, smooth, low-profile transition material that is inexpensive and attractive. It is available in many different finishes that will match any decor, including aluminum, brass, brushed nickel and oil-rubbed bronze. Metal carpet thresholds can either be nailed or screwed to the sub-floor, though nailing is by far the most common fastening method. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the length of the transition space with a tape measure. Measure the metal carpet threshold to find the difference in length, if there is any.
-
2
Take the difference in lengths and divide the difference by two. For example, if the metal carpet threshold measures 36 inches and the transition space measures 33 inches, the difference is three inches. Half of the difference is 1 1/2 inches.
-
-
3
Cut half of the difference off each end of the metal carpet threshold with a hack saw so the threshold will fit in the space and so the holes will remain centered in the space.
-
4
Place the metal carpet threshold over the transition space. The side of the threshold that angles down should cover the carpet side of the transition space, and the nail holes should fall between the carpet and the other flooring surface. If the carpet meets the other flooring surface, be sure that the nails will miss the other flooring surface and pass through the carpet. The nails will not hurt the carpet. You will be able to tell the metal carpet threshold is aligned in the transition space properly when equal amounts of both flooring surfaces are visible on both sides of the transition area.

5
Nail the metal carpet threshold in place with the provided metal trim nails and a hammer. Do not sink the nails too far into the sub-floor to avoid bending the metal carpet threshold.
