How to Install a Netgear DSL Modem

If you want to save money on your monthly Internet bill, purchase your own DSL modem. Typically an Internet provider charges a small monthly fee for your modem, and after a few years of Internet use you can easily pay a few hundred dollars just to use the device. Hooking up a Netgear DSL modem to your computer takes only a few moments and can be done without the aid of an Internet technician.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on your wall. If you do not have Internet ports installed in your home, connect a phone line adapter to a phone line jack. The adapter makes the phone line wider so Ethernet cables can connect to it. This does not block your phone from use.

    • 2

Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back side of the Netgear DSL modem.

    • 3

Connect the Netgear DSL modem to a local power source. The power plug inserts into the modem via a small port on the rear of the modem.

    • 4

Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the modem. Run the cable to your computer and plug it into the Ethernet port on the computer.

    • 5

Look on the back end of the DSL modem for an HTTP: address. Type this into your Internet browser's search bar. The Netgear DSL modem menu appears on the screen.

    • 6

Select how many computers are to use the modem, if you are using it with other DSL modems and set up a password (the default username and password is "admin"). Click "OK" to initiate the changes you made to the menu. You can now use your Netgear DSL modem to connect to the Internet.
