How to Play an iPod on a Computer

The Apple iPod is a personal media player capable of listening to music, watching movies and even surfing the Internet on some models. Plugging an iPod into a computer lets you accomplish numerous tasks, such as syncing music and charging the iPod's battery, using a program called iTunes, which comes with every iPod. You can also easily play music through your computer after iTunes loads and your computer reads your iPod.

      Plug your iPod into your computer using the iPod USB cable that came with your device. The USB input of the cable plugs into the computer's USB port and the other input plugs into your iPod's power plug-in.

      Open iTunes or wait for it to automatically load.

      Wait for your iPod's icon to appear in the Source pane in the "Devices" section if necessary. It may take several moments for your iPod to appear as your computer reads it.

      Click on your iPod. This opens a summary page.

      Check the box next to "Manually manage music" and click "Apply."

      Click on a media tab, such as "Music," and select the song you'd like to play.
