How to Decorate a Plastic Bottle With Wax Paper

Stained glass has a real elegance that many people like having in their homes. Unfortunately, the beautiful decorative glass is too costly for many people's budgets. But a nice substitute not only recreates the stained glass look, but also helps to recycle old plastic bottles. By taking some old, broken crayons, wax paper and a plastic bottle, you can create a paperweight for your desk that's pretty and original as well as functional.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two squares of wax paper. Make them the same size and large enough to cover the whole bottle.

    • 2

Make crayon shavings using the potato peeler.

    • 3

Sprinkle some of the crayon shavings onto one of the pieces of wax paper.

    • 4

Add additional decorations to the mix like glitter, but try to drop it in places where there isn't a lot of crayon shavings, because you'll want the glitter to shine through.

    • 5

Place another sheet of wax paper on top.

    • 6

Heat the iron to a low temperature. Iron the two pieces together until the crayon wax melts. Let the wax paper cool.

    • 7

Peel any labels from the plastic bottle.

    • 8

Fill the bottle with sand and then close the lid. Put the cap on the bottle. The sand will weigh the bottle down, which is what you'll need for your paperweight.

    • 9

Place the sand-filled bottle onto the center of the piece of crayoned wax paper.

    • 10

Pull up the sides of the wax paper until it extends over the top of the bottle. Enclose the wax paper around the neck of the bottle (like you would if you were wrapping a bottle with wrapping paper.)

    • 11

Tape the wax paper around the neck of the bottle. Tie a ribbon around the bottle's neck to hide the tape.

    • 12

Punch holes in the "wings" of wax paper that stick out from the neck and hang charms from them using the earring hooks.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can do a slight variation on this theme. Instead of wrapping the bottle in the colored wax paper, cut smaller pieces of the paper. Add the crayon shaving step to create the stained glass look, but when you get ready to fasten the wax paper to the bottle, glue it on instead of using the ribbon and tape. Let it dry and then add the sand.

  • Don't reuse plastic bottles for drinking; bacteria forms in old bottles.
