How to Write an Executive Cover Letter

According to Purdue University's Online Writing Lab, cover letters introduce your resume and show the potential employer your communication skills. Cover letters introduce you to the potential employer. Whether applying for an entry-level job or an executive position, cover letters are critical to the job search process. Instructions

    • 1

Create a header with your full contact information. Include your full name, address, e-mail address and phone number.

    • 2

Include the name and title of the specific person who reviews resumes. Include the date as well as the name and title of the person who makes the hiring decisions. Also include the name of the company and the mailing address, even if the cover letter is e-mailed.

    • 3

Note the job to which you are applying and how you came to know of the job opening. Under the salutation to the letter's intended recipient, include an opening sentence in the first paragraph that explicitly names the job you are seeking. If the job opening was publicized, note where you saw the advertisement. "I am applying for the senior vice president position at the Smith Corporation that is posted on the Executive Suite job bulletin board" is an acceptable opening sentence.

    • 4

State three characteristics that qualify you for the position. If there is a job advertisement, use keywords in the advertisement to tailor your cover letter. Characteristics such as efficient, organized and resourceful are all possible inclusions for an executive cover letter.

    • 5

List three to five specific accomplishments that support the three characteristics. Use bullet points or concise sentences to provide examples of accomplishments that exemplify the desired characteristics. As an executive, use strong action words and specific, detailed accomplishments. For example, instead of noting that you "managed large budgets," note that you "managed a total of $4.5 million in assets." Job Star recommends putting keywords in bold type.

    • 6

Indicate your intentions to follow-up or receive feedback on the cover letter. Show initiative by including a sentence about following up with the job inquiry. "I look forward to hearing from you" is an appropriate line for an executive cover letter.

    • 7

Thank the potential employer for her time in reviewing your cover letter and resume. This should be included at the end of your letter.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not know the gender of the cover letter recipient, use the person's full name instead of a gendered salutation for the letter.

  • Use sturdy paper for the cover letter.

  • Note the resume attachment in the cover letter.
