1
Determine placement for the stones by walking through the area where the stones are desired. The concrete squares (your new stepping stones) should have at least 2 inches between them for grass or mulch. Do not place them so far apart that it is difficult to step from one stone to the next.
-
2
Use the square shovel to dig out an area the same size as the concrete squares. Dig 1 inch deeper than the thickness of the concrete squares chosen for the project.
-
-
3
Use the hand rake to loosen the soil in the stone bed and rake until it is approximately level.
-
4
Pour 1 1/2 inches of sand into the depression. Rake the sand with the hand rake until the sand is close to level.
-
5
Place the concrete square onto the sand and place the level on top of the concrete square. The concrete square should sit slightly higher than the surrounding ground level. Gently shift the concrete square until it is level in all directions. Tamp the concrete square with your feet to press it firmly into position.

Tips & Warnings
Do not dig deeper than needed so the soil under the stones is not disturbed. This will create a firmer foundation for the concrete square and reduce settling in the future.
The edges of the concrete stones should not be more than 1 inch above the surrounding ground surface to reduce the risk of tripping over the edge of the stones.
