How to Wear the Sash With the Kilt

The kilt is one of the most important garments of Highland attire, as it directly represents traditional Scottish customs and history. Out of respect, it is crucial to wear such time-honored garments correctly. While the Scottish employ a more conventional and established manner of wearing the kilt, you'll find there is slightly more leeway when it comes to wearing the sash.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 to 6 yards of pleated tartan material
  • Belt
  • Brooch

Instructions

    • 1

Buckle your belt in place to keep the kilt from shifting. You should have 2 to 3 yards of tartan material left over. Drape the remaining material diagonally across your chest, over your left shoulder.

    • 2

Allow the remaining material to fall behind your left shoulder to your left hip. Pin it towards the front of your right hip with a brooch. Alternatively you can pin it at the top of your left shoulder and let the rest of the material drape behind you freely.

    • 3

Take the remaining material and pull the left corner of it around your back, and pull the right corner up to meet it at the left shoulder. There you can knot it at the top. This will give you a cape-like structure by your back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap the sash around the waist as an alternative style, if the weather is hot. Once you have just six inches of material left, tuck it into your belt.

Hmmm...don't confuse the sash of the ladies, worn on differing shoulders to signify status and marital status with the more formal "fly plaid" that you see now with men wearing a jacket. These are different than the remaining material from a great kilt, worn over shoulder.
