How to Read an Hourly Stock Chart

If you are an active stock trader or are interested in following the stock market, it is important to be able to read stock charts. Hourly stock charts give a detailed view of a stock's intra-day trading volume and price.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the stock chart. Visit a popular finance website such as Google Finance or Yahoo! Finance to find the chart for the stock you are interested in examining.

    • 2

Look at the line moving horizontally across the page from left to right. That line tells you the stock price. The line moves up to signify an increase in price and down to signify a decrease in price. The time is displayed at the bottom of the chart and the price can be found on the right or left side, depending on the provider of the chart.

    • 3

Examine the bottom of the chart. You will see bars extending upward from the bottom. These lines signify trading volume. Taller bars demonstrate higher trading volume, while shorter bars represent lower volume.

    • 4

Read the chart to find places where volume increases dramatically. These instances generally signify major news and coincide with a sudden, large change in price.
