How to Become Certified for Grant Writing
A grant writer is someone who writes and prepares documents for companies that are applying for grants. These organizations may be private entities, non-profit groups or even individuals. Having a certificate in grant writing will make you more desirable in the job market and provide you with better contacts and new skills. There are actually several types of grant certificates available, but the most prestigious and well-known is offered by the American Association of Grant Professionals (AAGP).

Earn an associate's or bachelor's degree in any subject.

Participate in AAGP activities, which include becoming a member of AAGP, attending conferences, taking coursework in grant writing, attending conferences or reading published works related to grant writing.

Participate in community activities, which may include sitting on a board of directors, providing pro bono work or performing 20 hours of volunteer work per year.

Register online at the AAGP website to take the AAGP exam. Submit your eligibility packet, which includes proof of all of your prerequisites listed in the steps above. Pay the $400 fee if you are an AAGP member, or $525 for non-members. They will inform you of the dates for your exam, which is held four times a year in various parts of the country.

Take part 1 of the exam, which is a 4-hour multiple-choice exam covering various topics on grant writing. Take part 2 of the exam the following day, which is a 2-hour writing exam. Topics include how to research and obtain funding resources, match agencies, write a grant application, design programs, ethics and professional relationship building.

Get a passing score on the exam. You will then be able to use the term "Grant Professional Certified."
