How to Design Your Own Business Flyer

Even if you have your business flyers laid out and printed professionally, it is a good idea for any business owner to participate in the process of designing marketing materials. By designing your own business flyer you can have an indispensable role in crafting its message and tone. Because you are so deeply involved in your business, you will have a finely developed sense of how you want to represent it, as well as sensibilities and gut instincts about your overall strategy for appealing to potential customers.

Instructions

Fold a piece of paper into three sections by making two folds. Designate the outside center panel for mailing addresses, with your own return address in its upper left-hand corner and space for the recipient's mailing address in the center. Use the panel that folds over to create the front for the most general introduction to your business, such as your company name, your company logo or an image that communicates the focus of your business, and a brief tag line about your products or services. Use the third panel from the that side of the paper--the panel that the customer will see as soon as they open the flyer--for a "teaser," or an image or bit of text that will entice them to continue opening the flyer, such as, "This summer, experience a bit of Paris in your own neighborhood."

Use the inside left and center panels for the heart of the message and information that you want to communicate. Explain your business or your new offerings that are the impetus for this flyer. Use both text and images, incorporating plenty of blank space to make the flyer visually appealing and to prevent the reader's eye from growing tired. Provide a coupon or a form on the right-hand panel for the customer to request additional information. This request for a response will enable you to gauge the success of your flyer by tracking its results.

Choose a font for your flyer that is consistent with the message and tone of your business. Comic Sans MS signals that your business is relaxed and fun, while a script font has an elegant feel, one that is appropriate for a designer boutique or high-end restaurant.

Use images that will transfer well to the type of stock you will be using to print your flyer. A basic line drawing will work well for a flyer printed on basic paper or card stock in a single color, while a photograph will work better in a full-color brochure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even if you do not have the technical skills to lay out a business flyer on the computer, you can still participate in the design process by cutting and pasting images and text in order to demonstrate your flyer ideas.
