How to Create a SMTP Server on Your Computer

An Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) server is one that relays email from the Internet or local network to your machine. You can set your Windows machine to act as an SMTP server by installing the optional component from the Control Panel. This is available to desktop machines that have server software or Internet Information Services (IIS) installed. Once installed, the machine can be used as a relay service for your network.

      Click the Windows Start button and select "Control Panel." Double-click the icon labeled "Add or Remove Programs." This opens a new window where you can edit the programs installed on your machine.

      Click the link labeled "Add or remove Windows components." This lists all the Windows-specific components that you can optionally remove and add to the machine, including SMTP support.

      Scroll down the list of Windows components and click "Application Server." A button displays on the right side of the icon. Click the "Details" button.

      Click the "Internet Information Services (IIS)" icon and then click the "Details" button again. This opens a list of components that are controlled by the IIS service.

      Check the box labeled "SMTP Service" and press "OK." Click the "OK" button when you're prompted to install the service. It may take several seconds to install the service. Once it's finished, your computer can now act as an SMTP relay server.
