How to Change the Battery in a First Generation IPod Touch
The iPod MP3 player revolutionized the portal music player industry. The first model was known as the first generation. As Apple made changes to the iPod, new models received a new generation designation. The most recent model is the fifth generation. The most common problem with the iPod is with the battery. They often stop working or burn out with a moderate level of use. You can save money by changing a first generation iPod battery yourself.

Press and hold the "Play" button on your iPod until the power turns off. Move the switch on the top of the iPod to the hold position so it doesn't power on while you're changing the battery.

Locate the firewire port on the top of your first generation iPod. In that area, take the tool that came with your battery replacement kit, and put it between the faceplate of the iPod and the metal closure on the back. Gently pry the corner of the iPod open.

Slide the tool around entire iPod between the faceplate and the metal back of the iPod until the back metal part is completely removed.

Pull out the battery; it's attached right above the hard drive. Keeping the battery cables attached, just remove it from the stickers holding the battery to the unit. Push down on the hard drive while pulling out the battery so you don't damage the hard drive.

Remove the hard drive by disconnecting the cables attached to the circuit board. Use tweezers for this task. Be careful not to damage the cables or hard drive.

Take out the battery completely by disconnecting the cables from the circuit board. Attach the new battery cables to the circuit board using the tweezers, but don't place the battery back in the unit yet.

Attach the hard drive cables to the board. Now reattach the battery cables to the circuit board.

Replace the back cover of the iPod. Be careful not to catch the wires between the faceplate and the iPod backing.

Tips & Warnings
Be gentle when separating the faceplate and back of the iPod.
Don't use a battery from a different generation iPod because it won't work.
