How to Hook Up DTV to a DirecTV Satellite and Antenna
A digital television (DTV) can be connected to a DirecTV satellite receiver for subscription programming, as well as an antenna for pulling in free digital broadcasts. The satellite receiver connects with composite audio video cables to a set of AV inputs on the DTV. A coaxial cable can be used to hook up the antenna to the DTV. These connections take less than five minutes. The cables are available at electronics stores and virtually anywhere televisions are sold.

Connect the composite AV cables to the AV OUT jacks on the back of the DirecTV receiver. The yellow cable connects to the Video OUT jack. The white cable connects to the left audio and the red cable attaches to the right audio for a stereo connection.

Insert the plugs on the other end of the cables into a free set of AV Input jacks on the back of the TV. Make a note of which set of inputs is used to attach the receiver because most digital television sets are equipped with at least three sets of jacks for connecting equipment such as receivers and gaming systems.

Connect a coaxial cable to the RF OUT jack on the antenna. The coupler on the end of the cable fits over the external threads on the jack and tightens by turning clockwise. Take care to insert the metal pin inside the cable directly into the jack.

Secure the other end of the coaxial cable to the RF IN jack on the back of the DTV to complete the antenna connection.

Turn on the receiver and press the "Input" button on the TV remote control repeatedly until the satellite signal appears.

Turn off the satellite receiver and turn on the DTV to watch broadcast television from the antenna.

Tips & Warnings
Use an antenna equipped with a power amplifier to boost the signal from broadcasting stations for better reception on the DTV. The connection to the DTV remains the same. An extra electrical outlet is needed to connect the antenna power cord.
Connect the AV cables before plugging the components into a wall outlet.
