How to Repair Rusted Box Gutters
A box gutter is a rain gutter that has a wood framework lined with bent sheet metal. The sheet metal creates the trough the rainwater flows down. Two metals traditionally used to line box gutters are tin-coated steel and copper. Copper is essentially maintenance free after it's installed. Tin coated steel however requires repainting every 8 to 10 years. If a box gutter has rusted, chances are it's lined with tin-coated steel that hasn't been properly maintained. Paint on a self-etching metal primer that doesn't require scraping the old paint back to bare metal. One that can be painted directly over the rust and stabilizes it.
