How to Make an Easter Basket With Sugar and Water
Homemade baskets made of sugar and water are beautiful and inexpensive additions to your Easter display. Not only will the project save you money, it will keep children free of boredom on a rainy spring afternoon. Floss dipped in a sugar and water solution, then wrapped around a balloon, creates the hard shell that forms the Easter basket. Does this Spark an idea?

- Sugar
- Hot water
- Medium sized bowl
- Spoon
- Skein of crochet floss
- Balloon
- Coffee mug or margarine tub
- Pin
- Easter embellishments and accessories

Pour 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of hot water in a medium sized bowl. Stir the sugar and water with a spoon until the sugar completely dissolves.

Place a skein of crochet floss in the bowl of sugar water. Submerge the floss to saturate it completely. Leave the floss in the sugar water while you move to the next step.

Blow up a balloon and tie it. The size of the balloon will determine the size of the Easter basket. Balloons that measure 12 to 15 inches are good sizes for baskets.

Wrap the floss around the entire balloon. Keep wrapping until the floss covers the majority of the balloon. It is OK to overlap the floss when you wrap the balloon, just try to maintain a lacey, see through look.

Set the balloon in a coffee mug or margarine tub and allow it to dry overnight. Keep the balloon in an area out of reach of children and pets so that it does not fall or pop during the drying process.

Check the balloon in the morning to make sure that the sugar-covered floss has hardened. Stick a pin through the floss to pop the balloon. You can remove the balloon later.

Cut a hole in the side of the Easter basket using a sharp pair of scissors. Poke the point of the scissors through the sugar-coated floss to make your first cut. You can also remove the balloon at this time.

Place decorative grass, eggs and candy inside the Easter basket. Embellish the outside of the basket with decorations of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
Make a more traditional Easter basket by only covering the bottom of the balloon with the floss, forming a bowl shape.
If you do not have crochet floss, yarn will suffice.
Sprinkle the floss with glitter while it dries to give the Easter basket a shimmery look.
Do not cover the balloon too densely with the floss. Create more of a spider web appearance, complete with holes.
Watch children around the hot water and sugar mixture. Allow small children to wrap the balloon with the floss only after the sugar solution begins to cool.

My class did this project...... we found it easier to wrap the floss around the balloon and THEN roll the ballon in a tray of the same mixture..... It comes out the same, but with less of the mess.
