How to Fasten Cable Clamps
Cable clamps are used to make a structural connection between two pieces of wire rope or to make a loop in a length of wire rope. A cable clamp holds the wire rope between a U-bolt that has two threaded ends and a saddle. When you thread hex nuts onto the threaded section of the U-bolt, the saddle presses against the wire rope. You need to ensure that you install the cable clamp correctly, or the wire rope can slip from the cable clamp. The saddle of the cable clamp must rest on the live end of the wire rope. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Cable clamps
- Tape measure
- Soapstone
- Socket set
- 3/8-inch drive torque wrench
Instructions
-
-
1
Separate the cable clamp by removing the two hex nuts from the threaded section of the U-bolt and sliding the saddle off the U-bolt.
-
2
Place the U-bolt of the cable clamp over the cut end of the wire rope, slide the saddle over the U-bolt and hold the two together with one hand.
-
-
3
Thread one hex nut onto the U-bolt. Run the hex nut by hand up to the base of the saddle. Repeat the process with the second hex nut.
-
4
Refer to the packaging of the cable clamp to determine the appropriate spacing for the rest of the cable clamps.
-
5
Set the end of the tape measure on the first cable clamp and place a mark on the wire rope with the soapstone at the distance specified by the cable clamp manufacturer.
-
6
Set another cable clamp on the wire rope as described earlier. Repeat the process for the number of cable clamps that you need to install.
-
7
Select a socket from the socket set that matches the size of the cable clamp hex nuts and attach the socket to the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench.
-
8
Set the torque wrench to the specified setting by the cable clamp installation instructions.
-
9
Tighten each hex nut of the first cable clamp until the torque wrench reads that you have reached the correct torque amount.
-
10
Repeat the tightening procedure until all the hex nuts of the cable clamps are set to the correct amount of torque to complete fastening the cable clamps.
