1
Erect 4-by-4 vertical beams approximately four feet apart along the outer perimeter of the porch. These beams should either be nailed in directly to the porch floor boards or installed with mounting brackets secured with a power drill and screws. These beams should be cut to come even with the existing roof edge; once the porch roof is finished, the joining between flat porch and house roof should be seamless.

2
Place 4-by-4 vertical beams flush against the edge of the house, also keeping them four feet across. Once this step is completed, you should have a rectangular outline that will serve as the main anchoring beams for the roof framing structure.

3
Tie the 4-by4 beams together by nailing in a 2-by-4 board across the tops of the vertical beams. This structure will provide greater stability and provide a place where the joists can be installed next. The rectangular outline is now completed once this 2-by-4 board is in place all the way around the top of the current framing.

4
Install 2-by-4 joists on top of the 2-by4 framing board, extending each joist across the frame, moving from the edge of the house out to the edge of the porch. These joists should be turned so that the narrow edge of the board faces the porch floor.
-
5
Attach the joists to the edge of the house using builder's brackets and screws. This will provide the final part of the framing structure and allow you to go on and install the roof itself, including whatever shingles or other roofing materials that best suits your home improvement needs.
