How to Make a Greenhouse Dome From a Plastic Soda Pop Bottle

Give a two-liter plastic soda pop bottle a new life. Recycle it as a mini greenhouse dome for a single houseplant or to help sprout seedlings for flowers or vegetables. Although kids can be involved in the project, an adult must participate to handle the sharp knife, scissors and ice pick parts of the process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and drain dry the interior of a clear or green two-liter plastic bottle.

    • 2

Slip the tip of a sharp knife under the bottle's label to start the label removal. If desired, spread multipurpose cleaner on any remaining adhesive and remove it with a paper towel or cloth.

    • 3

Carefully punch at least two holes through the plastic near the bottle's base, which will be the top of the greenhouse dome. Punch the holes on opposite sides of the bottle. This allows a little ventilation but keeps the humidity inside the dome.

    • 4

Determine how tall you would like the dome to be when finished. Punch a hole through the bottle with an ice pick at the proper place to begin cutting. Poke the scissors through the hole and cut around the bottle. Trim up any rough edges with the scissors.

    • 5

Cutting the two-liter bottles in half creates two domes from each bottle. The pouring spout half dome can be used without the bottle cap for good ventilation.

    • 6

Place a small plant or peat moss seedling starter pot on a plate. Cover it with the dome and set it in a location that receives sun during the day. If too much humidity builds up inside the dome, causing excessive condensation on dome's interior, punch one or two more ventilation holes in the dome.
