How to Wind a Ball of Yarn From a Hank
Yarn is available in a variety of forms. While many brands of yarn are sold conveniently wound into balls, others are sold as hanks. A hank is essentially a large loop of yarn. Unfortunately, you cannot knit or crochet directly from a hank. To avoid tangling the yarn, you will need to first wind the hank into a ball yourself. If you do not have a yarn ball winder, learning to do this by hand is a useful skill.

1
Untwist the hank so that it forms a large loop.
-
2
Place the loop over the back of a chair, around your knees, or anything that will hold the hank somewhat taut.
-
-
3
Locate where the beginning and end of the hank are tied together. Untie them or cut off the knot.
-
4
Take one end of the hank and wind the yarn several times around the palm of your hand.
-
5
Slip the yarn from your hand and fold it in half to form a small ball.
-
6
Place a few fingers over the small ball. Wind the yarn loosely several times around both the ball and your fingers. Slip your fingers from the yarn. Place your fingers on a different area of the ball and repeat. Winding the yarn around your fingers will keep the yarn from being wound too tightly, which can stress and stretch the fibers.

Continue until you have wound the entire hank.

Tips & Warnings
Do not attempt to wind the hank without placing it over the back of a chair or something similar. Failure to do so will result in tangled yarn.
