How to Cut Cinder Block

When cutting cinder blocks, you have options. While a masonry blade and a circular saw will provide the cleanest cut, not everyone has such power tools readily available. Also, circular saws create a significant amount of dust. An easy and more accessible method of cutting cinder blocks involves simply a stone-cutting chisel and a hammer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cinder block on a steady work area: either the ground or on top of other cinder blocks. It should be placed flat and the holes should be facing sideways.

    • 2

Measure the exact halfway point of your cinder block's length with measuring tape and lightly trace a line across the width of the block (bisecting its length), using the corner of your chisel.

    • 3

Turn the cinder block over and trace the opposite side with a line placed identically to the one in step 2.

    • 4

Place your chisel on the line and hammer it into the cinder block lightly. Move the chisel sideways along the traced line and hammer once in each spot along the line.

    • 5

Turn the block over once again and repeat step 4 on the opposite side of the cinder block, along the traced line.

    • 6

If your cinder block has not yet cracked, repeat steps 4 and 5, tapping your chisel along the traced lines until the block splits into two.

    • 7

Chisel off the rough edges of your newly split blocks.

Tips & Warnings

  • When chiseling cinder blocks, you may want to wear protective safety glasses to defend your eyes from flying concrete.
