How to Use a Shimano Flight Line Shifter

Shimano shifters are known for their reliability and precision. Also known as STI shifters, Shimano Flight Line shifters feature an integrated shifter/brake design that is compatible with a Shimano's Flight Deck computer, which registers cadence, distance, speed and current gear. The integrated shifter is a radical improvement from the days when shifters where located on the bicycle downtube. Integrated shifters are located on the handlebar, within easy reach of the hands, making for quick, effortless shifting. The left-side shifter will operate the front gears, while the right-side shifter will affect the rear gears.

Instructions

  1. Rear Shifting

    • 1

Identify the two levers on each shifter. There will be one long one, which also serves as the brake lever, and another, smaller one directly behind it.

    • 2

Push the large right-side shifter lever in toward the bike. Pushing the large lever in this direction will move the chain to a larger cog. A larger cog will make for less pedaling resistance.

    • 3

Push the small shifter lever, located directly behind the large lever, in toward the bike. This will cause the chain to move to a smaller cog, creating greater pedaling resistance.

    Front Shifting

    • 4

Push the large left-side shift lever in toward the bike. The chain will move onto the large front chain ring, leading to greater pedaling resistance.

    • 5

Push the small shift lever in toward the bike. The chain will move from the large to the small chain ring, for less resistance.

    • 6

Continue to practice shifting. Practice will help develop your shifting skills, until they become second nature.
