How to Grind Your Own Wheat Berries
Truly homemade bread begins by grinding your own wheat berries into a sweeter, fresher whole grain flour than you can buy at the store. Contrary to their name, wheat berries have no relation to raspberries or blueberries. The name refers to the entire wheat kernel, including the bran and germ layers. By becoming your own miller, you have the option to sprout your wheat berries before grinding to increase the availability of the vitamins and minerals from the wheat. As with most home-milled grains, and whole wheat flours, soaking the grains before grinding the wheat berries softens their texture, yielding a moister loaf. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Wheat berries
- Water
- 1 qt. jars with lid (1 per every 2 ½ c. wheat berries)
- Baking sheet
- Grain mill or burr grinder

Pour 2 ½ cups of wheat berries into the bottom of each jar.

Fill the jars to the top with water and cover overnight.

Drain the jars containing the wheat berries completely and spread out the wheat berry layer on a baking sheet.

Bake in the oven at the lowest setting (200 degrees F or less) with the door ajar. This will completely dry the wheat berries.

Fill the hopper of your grain mill or burr grinder with the wheat berries and set to a fine grind.

Turn the power on for electric grinders or turn the handle for manual mills.
