Instructions

Make sure you a high quality brush or roller for the job. A good brush is the best way to get a good cut especially when cutting in the two colors where the wall and the ceiling meet.

Tape off every bit of baseboard and also trim around windows and doors. The best tape to use is Frogtape. Its green, and does not peel the paint when removing. It is more expensive, but well worth it.

Cover any furniture, and also cover lights or even better, remove them if possible. Remove all outlet and light switch covers. A drop cloth can be used on the floor, however, I use plastic, taped to the baseboards to cover the entire floor if possible.

Patch any holes on walls and ceiling. On the walls, after patching and sanding, you should use a PVA primer, this will help hide the patch when the final coat is on.

You are ready to paint. A good quality paint can make the difference between a good paint job and a bad one. Prices vary from the quality. Benajamin Moore, Valspar, and Olympic are good quality paints. If you are lucky enough to have all the furniture out and the floor covered, one way to paint would be to spray the ceiling. If you do this, you must make sure the doors and windows are covered. Use a 10 or 12 foot plastic to make sure it goes from the top of the wall to the floor. Covering the doors and windows stops any type of overspray which can make a mess in the other parts of your house. If you do not want to spray, rolling works just as well, and you don't have to worry about overspray. It takes longer, but less prep. Rolling the ceiling starting from one side and work your way to the other side. You will need a brush to get where the ceiling meets the wall. Try not to overlap the paint, however if you get paint on the walls, you can cover it when painting the walls.

After spraying or rolling the ceiling, you can now paint the walls. Paint up and down the walls, stopping about an inch from the ceiling. After you paint all the walls, you will need a ladder, and a good brush to cut in where the ceiling meets the wall. This takes a lot of time and effort, but will look fabulous after. Remember, when taking of the paint, do it slowly and carefully. With the frogtape, you shouldn't have any bleeding or peeling, but better safe than sorry.
