How to Hang Sheer Curtains on a Crescent Window

Crescent windows can present problems when attempting to cover them with a window treatment. The crescent is typically a significant part of the room decor so the decorator may not want to disguise the arched shape. Usually, a wood molding frames the crescent window and adds texture and decorative value to the home. Using a straight curtain rod above the window will cover the shape and woodwork. To avoid this, consider using a flexible curtain rod made for crescent windows. The flexible rods are clear, so they will not show through, even when hanging sheer curtains.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of flexible rod required for your window. Begin on the left side at the point where the crescent starts and measure up and around the curve to the end of the crescent on the right side. The contour of the crescent must be measured exactly. This measures the rounded part of your window. If your window is over-sized, two rods can be joined to accommodate the dimensions.

    • 2

Install the flexible curtain rod within the window casing. The kit will come with clips to secure the rod in place and will have detailed directions for installation.

    • 3

Put the flexible rod through the sheer curtain rod casing. Place the flexible curtain rod in position. When the rod is snapped into the mounted clips, it will arch to the same shape as the crescent window.

    • 4

Mark the hemline for your curtains. Curtains purchased off the shelf will not accommodate for the exact arch of your window. Draw a chalk line all the way across the sheer curtains' width, at the point you want the curtains to hang.

    • 5

Take the sheer curtains from the window and rod. Cut the bottom of the sheers 3 inches below the chalk line. Turn the cut edge up 1 1/2 inches. Turn the bottom up another 1 1/2 inches and pin in place. Baste the hem in place with a hand stitch.

    • 6

Put the rod back in the casing. Mount the flexible rod back in the clips. Hang the sheers in place three or four days to provide time for the fabric to stretch or shrink. Remove the basting and adjust the hem. Machine stitch the hem, press and rehang.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to pull the sheer curtains back in holders on each side of the window, you may choose not to hem the curtains. Simply mount the holders about one-half the distance from the top of the window to the floor.

  • Avoid using regular rods and bending them to shape. Although many rods will bend, only flexible rods will bend to the correct contour and allow the sheers to hang correctly.
