How to Track Children's Computer Use

The Internet is a miraculous tool that allows us to speak with people from around the globe and learn about just about any topic we can imagine. However, the Internet can also be a dangerous place. The Internet provides a way for children to get help with homework but also to stumble upon illegal and immoral information and images as well as unknowingly chat with child predators. Many parents want to track their children's computer usage to ensure that they are only viewing age-appropriate material. Though there are several expensive software packages that can be purchased, there are free ways to track your children's computer usage.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a Windows Live account for each of your children. Ensure that all children have their own unique usernames and passwords. Also create a Windows Live account for yourself as the administrator.

    • 2

Choose the level of filtering and limitations you would like for each child. You can limit their amount of time spent on the computer, the privilege to download content, the ability to view certain websites and who they can chat with.

    • 3

Enable the activity reporting feature of Windows Live. This allows you to see where your children have been on the Internet, how many times they have visited each website and how long they have spent at the computer.

    • 4

Use the content management aspect of Windows Live to view and limit who your children are chatting with and emailing on the Internet.

    • 5

Log into your Windows Live account frequently to check your children's usage.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your children can email you a request to view blocked websites, at which time you can evaluate the website and choose to allow or deny access.
