How to Create a Photo Collage With Software

A photo collage is a compilation of several images into one image. For decades, kids have made photo collages with pictures from magazines and other sources. Today, digital photo collages are just as popular and easy enough that anyone can learn to do it. Photo collage software allows users to create custom photo collages from personal images or pictures scanned from books, magazines and websites, complete with text effects and image special effects.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose image editing graphics software that has a collage feature or software designed specifically for creating photo collages. There are many programs on the market. If you have Photoshop, creating photo collages is easy, but if you don't want to buy Photoshop, there are numerous alternatives (see resources).

    • 2

Create a folder on your computer where you'll store all of the images you want to work with. Having everything organized in one location helps make the process of finding your images easier and allows you to focus on putting the collage together instead of hunting for images.

    • 3

Open your collage software and go to the "File" menu. Create a "New" document. This will be your base image. Open up the first image you want to put on your collage.

    • 4

Go to the "Edit" menu and use the tools available to add effects or shape the image. Use the lasso tool to select any areas you want to remove from your image, then right-click the image and cut it to the clipboard. Place your cursor on the blank image and use the "Paste" function to place your image onto your base image.

    • 5

Continue to add new images to your collage. You can drag and drop the images to place them where you want them on your collage. Use the "Send To" feature to move images forward and backward to rearrange the order in which they overlap one another.

Tell a visual story by arranging the image elements from left to right in order of the story. On the "Edit" menu, select the "Blend" tool and blend images together seamlessly to take away the overlaps and give the collage a more balanced appearance.
