Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a visor or hat.
Step2
Make sure to bring outdoor basics: insect repellent, a Swiss army or other kind of pocketknife, a flashlight, and waterproof matches or a lighter.
Step3
Include high-energy snacks, fruit - such as apples or bananas - and at least two bottles of water.
Step4
Purchase and take along a travel-size first aid kit, available at sporting goods stores. If the kit doesn't already include bandages and antiseptic lotion, pack them as well. Also, pack allergy medication for allergic reactions or stings.
Step5
Pack essential outdoor clothing items such as a windbreaker, an extra pair of wool socks, and thick leggings or sweatpants.
Step6
Bring a map and a cell phone if you can make calls from the area in which you'll be hiking. Call your cell-phone provider to find out.

on 11/22/2005 First aid is great! However, if you're healthy, have no cell phone or GPS, and you're stuck out yonder with no clear sky, sun, or you're a novice - then a compass is a must have! Just make sure not to hold it next to anything magnetic or metal, such as your belt, as it could alter the direction!

on 11/22/2005 Don't ever pick up a snake unless you know for sure that it's nonpoisonous. If you are not sure what species it is, enjoy it from a distance.

on 11/22/2005 Add an ACE-type bandage to your kit for sprains or snake bite first aid. If you have room and don't mind a little extra weight, also add an instant cold pack.
