How to Report Mail Scam in Outlook Express

Email is a great way to communicate with people. Unfortunately, scammers have found email to be quite lucrative. Email scams range from bait and switch tactics to phishing activities in which victims are tricked into giving out personal information that scammers use for identify theft purposes. The best way to protect yourself and others from becoming the victim of an email scam is to recognize the scams and report them. Outlook Express has easy ways for you to report email scams.

Instructions

Create a new message in Outlook Express, and then drag and drop the scam email into the new message. It will go in as an attachment. Send the email to the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) at phishing-report@us-cert.gov. Another method is to open the scam email message in Outlook Express and forward it to US-CERT. If you cannot or do not want to forward the email, you can send the URL of the web site it came from to US-CERT.

Report fraud email to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), advises Microsoft.com. The service provider's contact email will be on the bill for your Internet service. Use the drag-and-drop or forwarding functions of Outlook Express to send the scam email to your ISP.

For phishing emails, report them to the company the emailer was pretending to work for, such as your credit card company or bank. Make sure you send a new email to the address listed on official company materials. Do not simply reply to the fake email. Include the scam email as an attachment or forwarded message.

File a complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ftc.gov. The FTC will enter your complaints into the Consumer Sentinel Network, an online database used by law enforcement in the U.S. and abroad.

Use Outlook Express to forward the bogus email to the system administrators at the Network Abuse Clearinghouse. This service will help you find out who sent you the scam email.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to install antivirus software on your computer to protect you from emails containing viruses. Some bad emails do not require you to click on a link in order to deliver the virus.
