How to Cut Windows for a Dollhouse

You can create handmade dollhouses to give as a gift for a young girl, or to display in your home as a finely crafted art object. Making the roof, floor and walls for a dollhouse is easy enough, but cutting out those small openings for the windows is a bit more involved. Dollhouse windows can easily be cut out using just a drill and a jig saw. Ensure perfectly square openings for your dollhouse windows by using precise measurements and by making careful cuts. Cut out the windows before assembling the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and draw the window openings to be cut out of the dollhouse wall. Although not necessary, if you are installing windows (window panes with frames) into the openings, base the dimensions on the size of your window frames.

    • 2

Clamp your dollhouse wall to a worktable, on a surface or a scrap of wood that can be drilled into.

    • 3

Drill a line of three to four successive holes in each corner of each window. Use a drill bit that is just wider than the width of the jig saw blade. Drill the first hole directly in the corner, and then make the additional holes following the drawn line of the window. Make your holes just inside the line. Drill the holes close enough together that the merge to create a slot. There should be one slot for each side of the rectangle.

    • 4

Re-clamp your wall for sawing out the window openings. Clamp a guide board to the wall for running the side of the base plate of the jig saw against while cutting. This will ensure a straight cut.

    • 5

Insert the blade of the jig saw into one of the drilled out slots. Saw out the first edge of the opening being careful to stop at the end of the line. Remove the jig saw and insert the blade into the next slot. Continue to cut out the rest of the window in the same manner.

Use a wood file to sand off any rough edges and to remove any splinters.

Tips & Warnings

  • Windows panes with frames can be purchased separately from dollhouse parts suppliers or can be made on your own using acrylic sheeting and thin strips of wood.
