Your Xbox One acts as a repository for personal data: addresses, credit cards and email accounts, just to name a few. Resetting the device is the only way to completely remove everything on the console at once -- an important thing to do if you're planning for the machine to change owners. Be careful, though: You will lose any new save files or achievements earned since you last connected to Xbox Live.
Press the "Menu" button on your controller when the XBox One displays the dashboard.
Select "Settings," followed by "System." This opens a menu where you can view console information, set language, change location and reset the console.
Press "A" on "Restore factory defaults." Select "Yes" to confirm that you'll erase everything stored on the device and begin the process.
Tips & Warnings
- Whenever you connect to Xbox Live, your data is synchronized. You can always download your profile onto a new Xbox One and retain your data.
- Do not turn off the Xbox One while restoring. During this process, the software overwrites itself to return to its factory state; if the process is interrupted, you could be left with a half-overwritten console that won't boot.
