How to Type Really Fast on a Keyboard

Learning to type on a keyboard with speed and accuracy requires time and practice. There are many exercises that can be done to help an individual to learn to type faster, while at the same time making fewer mistakes. Having the ability to type fast while making few mistakes will benefit a person in many areas of their life including school and work.

1. Familiarize yourself and your hands with the proper hand positioning for the keyboard. There are many website tutorials that can help with this. Proper hand positioning is important to ensure comfort when typing and will prevent discomfort during and after typing. Provide support to your wrists and forearms with a gel pad, which can be purchased at many office supply stores. Become accustomed to looking at the computer screen while typing instead of the keyboard, as this will help increase your typing speed.

2. Practice typing with your hands in the correct finger placement. Type your name, address and a few sentences with your hands in the correct finger placement. Repetitive practice will eventually help you become used to this positioning. It may seem awkward at first, but eventually this position will become comfortable and will make typing faster easy to achieve.

3. Practice typing drills - set a timer and time yourself. Open a document next to another open document you will type in, and type everything you see in the window while timing yourself. Build your speed and compete against yourself. This will take practice and consistency, but improvement should be seen.

4. Take typing drills online. Many websites offer free practice typing drills and can assist you in both your speed and accuracy. Practice each day for a set amount of time.
