How to Cite Online Work

The most commonly used writing styles are Chicago, American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA). There are several formatting rules when citing online work. To properly cite, you will need to use a single writing style consistently throughout your paper.

Instructions

  1. APA Style

    • 1

Cite just the website within the text in parentheses if you are using the entire website as a reference. In this case, the citation does not need to be included in the references. For example: (www.eHow.com).

    • 2

Add the citation to the references if you are referencing a specific page or document from a website. To cite such a reference in the text, use this format: (author, date).

    • 3

Use this format for the bibliography:
Author last name, first name (year, month day). Title of document. Website name. Retrieval date from the World Wide Web: website address

    Chicago Style

Enter the entry number for the reference as superscript. For example: The facts stated that... 3

    • 6

Use this format for the bibliography:
(entry number). Author last name, first name. "Page or document title." Website name. Document day month year. <website link to document> (Retrieval day month year).

    MLA Style

    • 7

Include the online resources in the works cited and reference the information in the text as needed.

    • 8

Reference the online source as an in-text citation by adding the author's last name or part of the title in parentheses following the quote or fact. For example: (Smith) or ("Citing Resources").

Use this format for documenting online resources in the works cited:
Author last name, first name. "Article title." Website name Document creation day month abbreviated.Year. Document retrieval day month abbreviated. Year <website link to document>
