How to Reuse Gallon Glass Jars

Gallon-size glass jars have many uses. They usually package bulk items like pickles, as well as liquids like tea and milk. Some companies offer a discount or refund when you buy milk in glass jars, or you may receive a certain percentage off of your next purchase if you turn them in for recycling. While recycling can help to cut down on waste dramatically, there are other ways of reusing gallon-size glass jars.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the gallon jar with water and add two tea bags. Screw the lid onto the jar. Place the jar in the sun and leave there until the tea reaches your preferred darkness and strength. Add sugar for desired sweetness. Designate this jar specifically for making sun tea.

    • 2

Pour decorative rocks into the bottom of a glass jar. Put silk flowers, along with some leafy green or yellow accents, into the jar on top of the layer of rocks. Use this as a colorful centerpiece or decoration.

    • 3

Turn a jar into a holiday decoration with seasonal flowers and painted stencils on the outside. You can really go crazy with this kind of a craft, employing the use of different colored paints, stencils and glitter. Make this an attractive accent to any room by using the color scheme of that room. Leaves also make great stencils for a natural looking, neutral decoration.

    • 4

Fill the bottom of the jar with 2 to 3 inches of decorative rocks. Fill the jar with water and add a beta fish. Place a hydroponic plant on top of the jar to add a colorful decoration to any room.

    • 5

Fill the jar with layers of different colored sands. Put some pretty sea shells or aquarium props inside to make a beach scene.

Tips & Warnings

  • Glass jars can be used in several different crafts, do not be afraid to get really creative and get the kids involved.

  • Be careful if the glass jar breaks and shatters. Sweep up immediately and do not walk around broken glass in bare feet to avoid injury. If you sustain a cut and it will not stop bleeding after 20 minutes with firm pressure, go to the doctor's office immediately.
