How to Study for the TOEIC Writing Test

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) writing test ascertains the level of proficiency of your English writing abilities. You have 60 minutes to answer seven questions and then write an essay based on one of your opinions. The first section requires that you write a sentence based on a picture. The next section will ask you to respond to a couple of emails. The last section, and the one you will want to reserve the most time for, will ask you to write a 300-word essay, responding to a question that asks you to state, explain and support your opinion on an issue.

Go through all the exercises in the book for Section 1. Practice writing descriptive sentences using two or three of the words given. You must incorporate these words. Once you've finished an exercise, go back, check your answers and see if you can rearrange the word order and still make a correct sentence.

    • 2

Practice exercises in the book that involve reading and writing emails. Always draft your email in complete sentences and make sure that you respond to any questions or concerns in the original email. Check your answers and study the sample emails they provide you within the book.

    • 3

Practice the structure of a formal essay and keep yourself to a strict format that involves an introduction, a body paragraph and a conclusion. Always practice with the hardest, most boring essay topics in the book; those topics will give you confidence and test your writing abilities. Ask a friend or teacher with a better command of English to check your essays when you're done.

Tips & Warnings

  • A great way to get more practice for Step 2 is to write and read actual emails in English every day to and from a native English-speaking pen pal.

  • Every time you study, check for mistakes. Become aware of any mistakes that you make over and over again. Begin to eliminate them and catch them before they happen.
