How to Make Yoghurt

You can make healthy, fresh, delicious yoghurt at home. Making your own will save you money and help the environment by reducing the waste of plastic yoghurt containers from the grocery store. Yoghurt makers are inexpensive and easy to find at most houseware stores or online. Making your own yoghurt will give you the freshest possible product for optimal health benefits. Things You'll Need

  • Yoghurt maker
  • 1 qt. of milk
  • 1 qt. glass jar
  • Candy thermometer
  • 2 tbsp. fresh plain yoghurt

Instructions

      Plug in your yoghurt maker.

      Pour 1 qt. of milk into glass jar. Place jar of milk in a pan of water and heat the milk. Use the candy thermometer to determine when the milk has reached 185 degrees.

      Turn off the heat and allow the milk to cool to 110 degrees.

      Gently stir 2 tbsp. of fresh plain yoghurt into the milk until completely dissolved. Do not whip.

      Place the milk with yoghurt added into your yoghurt maker.

      Allow yoghurt to incubate in the yoghurt maker for at least 6 hours. For more sour yoghurt, incubate longer. You can incubate the yoghurt for up to 12 hours.

      Refrigerate your yoghurt to store it. It will stay fresh for up to two weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you've made your first batch of yoghurt, reserve some to start your next batch.

  • You don't need a yoghurt maker to make yoghurt. You can use a cooler, or a warm (100 degrees) oven to incubate your yoghurt.
