How to Wear a Tassel on a College Cap
It is a long-standing custom that during a college graduation ceremony, graduates typically wear specific attire consisting of a gown and a cap with a flat board (sometimes referred to as a mortarboard). A tassel attaches to the center of the mortarboard and hangs to a particular side, indicating the status of the graduate in question.

1
Put the cap on your head. Make sure it sits level and is not hanging off the back or to either side. Most caps come with an elastic band in order to fit multiple head sizes. Notice the tassel that attaches to the very center of the mortarboard, and make sure it hangs off of the right side of the cap if you are receiving a bachelor's degree, and to the left, if you are receiving a master's or doctoral degree.

2
Wait for your name to be called. Once it is, shake hands with the dean while simultaneously receiving your diploma.

Switch your tassel from one side of your cap to the other at the point when your school considers your degree to be conferred. Some schools want you to move your tassel directly after you have received your degree, while other institutions prefer having the entire graduating class switch their tassels in unison.
