Purchase your supplies. Make sure you get the kind of garland that has a small amount of string or spacing between the beads; if it is composed of nothing but beads glued tightly together it will not work for this project. Any color garland will do, and you can easily match the garland and the crochet thread to your Christmas decorating color scheme. Choose crochet thread that is relatively thin, size 3 or 10. This will be available at a local yarn or craft store and comes in a variety of colors.

Attach your thread to the garland at the space between the first two beads. Make a slip stitch with your hook to attach the thread, and then go down the garland by making two or three chain stitches (depending on the size of the beads) and then using a slip stitch between every bead. Repeat this pattern down the entire length of your garland.

Work the opposite side of the garland. When you reach the space between the last two beads, turn your work and make slip stitches and chain stitches down the other side or the garland. Join with a slip stitch in the space between the first two beads, where you started.

Make decorative stitches into the chain stitch loops on each side of every bead. Try a simple shell-stitch pattern by making three double crochet stitches in each chain loop space. Alternately, create a v-stitch by making one double crochet stitch, one chain stitch and a second double crochet stitch in every chain-two space. Or try a picot stitch--make one single crochet stitch, three chain stitches, and a second single crochet stitch in each chain loop space. In between chain spaces, make one single crochet stitch between each bead.

Finish your garland by continuing your pattern (decorative stitch in every chain-loop space, single crochet in every space between the beads) all down the garland and around the other side to the beginning. Join with a slip stitch in your beginning stitch and cut the string. Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends, and hang the garland on your tree.
