How to Get Corrupt Hard Drive Off of a Compaq C500

Regardless of whether the hard drive on a computer is easy to replace, as it is in the Compaq c500 Notebook, or difficult, as it is in many desktop computers, doing so with a bad hard drive with all of your important files locked on it is always a pain. You lose everything, but you can replace the hardware in five minutes or less. The trade may be uneven at first, but once your computer is back up, you'll forget about the things you lost sooner or later.

Instructions

    • 1

Back up all of your important files and drivers, if it's possible. A corrupt hard drive may not work at all, in which case you won't be able to do anything with the operating system.

    • 2

Shut down the computer, disconnect the power cord, and allow the hardware to cool. You may want to remove the battery and any other devices that are connected to the computer, just to ensure that there is no power going into the machine. You will also be able to maneuver it more easily this way.

    • 3

Turn the computer over and locate the hard drive compartment cover. It has two screws in it.

    • 4

Extract the screws and remove the cover.

    • 5

Move the hard drive to the right side of the compartment to disconnect it from the hard drive port and take it out of the computer.

    • 6

Install the new hard drive into the compartment and lock it into the port. Replace the cover and screws.

    • 7

Turn the computer over and replace the battery and the power cord.

    • 8

Start up the computer and install a new operating system. Once the operating system is installed, you can replace the files from your old hard drive and connect the other external devices that you removed in Step 2.
