How to Calculate the Area of a Kite


A kite is a four-sided figure that consists of two pairs of congruent sides with diagonals that always intersect at 90-degree angles. A kite can be divided into two triangles, and by using algebra, you can prove the area equals one-half the length times the width. To calculate the area of a kite, you need to know the length and the width of the kite.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Measure the distance from the top of the kite to the bottom at the longest point.

  • Measure the width of the kite at the widest point.

  • Multiply the length by the width. For example, if the kite was 14 inches long and 8 inches wide, you would get 112.

  • Divide the result from Step 3 by two to calculate the area, or square inches, of the kite. For example, divide 112 by two to find that the area of the example kite equals 56 square inches.
