How to Create an Image Map Using Image Ready

An image map creates a hyperlink that will cover a region of a graphic. Consider a world map that provides access to information on all the continents. An image map would cover the territory of each isolated land mass. As viewers click on the continents, a page appears that gives information about the countries on that land. Adobe ImageReady is a graphic editor capable of creating image maps. The program, designed to allow for quick editing, has limited capabilities. If you want to map an image, ImageReady is a decent choice.

Instructions

    • 1

Open ImageReady on your computer. Access the program directly or by clicking on the icon in PhotoShop Toolbox.

    • 2

Load your image by clicking on "File" and selecting "Open" to find the image on your hard drive.

    • 3

Move to the image map toolbar in ImageReady. Click on "Window" and find the toolbar if it is not already open on your screen.

    • 4

Select an image map shape for the first area of your graphic. For instance, if you have a picture of a car to map, you might want a link on each tire. Select a circle shape for the first tire.

    • 5

Drag the selected shape to cover the area. Click on the circle and drag it over the tire.

    • 6

Click on the image map select tool, an icon on the toolbar that looks like a hand with an arrow. This will create handles on the shape and allow you to resize it. Click on a handle and hold down your right mouse button. Pull the handle to expand or contract the image to the appropriate size.

    • 7

Enter a name for the area in the "Name" field of the image map palette. The palette will open automatically once the map is properly sized.

    • 8

Type in the URL for the page you are linking. This is the page you want open from the image map.

    • 9

Enter the target. By default, the link will open in the same window. You can change the setting so that it opens in a separate window by altering the target.

    • 10

Type in alternate text to appear when a user moves the pointer over the map area. This will explain the link.

    • 11

Save the map by clicking on "File" and "Save." Enter a file name for the map. Verify that the "Save as" type field is set to "HTML" and "Images."
